Who are we?

The Catalunya Neutral Internet Exchange Point (CATNIX), was born
in 1999 as a result of the Catalan Information Society Strategic
Plan "Catalunya en Xarxa", a joint initiative of the Catalan
Government and Localret with the aim of "setting the bases and
defining the actions for allowing Catalonia to achieve a leader
position on that new Information Society".
The agreement for its creation was signed in the April 7th, 1999
as an initiative of the Centre de Supercomputació de
Catalunya (CESCA) and the sponsorship of the formally known as
Commissioned for the Information Society to interconnect
telecommunication operators, internet suppliers and the Catalan
scientific community. The main purpose is to guide the traffic of
internet, so the users can have a better service by shortening the
way where the information flows, since it is required (through the
web, through ftp,...) until it is finally received. The founders of
CATNIX, besides the ones already mentioned, are the
following:
- BT Telecomunicaciones.
- Catalana de Telecomunicacions SOX (Al-Pi).
- Datagrama.
- Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca.
- Infase Comunicaciones.
- Institut Català de Tecnologia.
- Internet Network Services.
- Menta.
- Retevisión.
- Sarenet.
CATNIX is located at the same place as CESCA, from where the
commutation data and transmission services to the connected
entities are managed and offered. CESCA also carries out the
administrative and technical
requirements that all future entities have to fulfill in order
to join CATNIX.
