20 years of CATNIX!

The Catalunya Neutral Internet Exchange Point (CATNIX) celebrates its 20th anniversary this 2019. The first connection was made on June 3, 1999, when the then Datagrama (later integrated to Jazztel) was connected at a speed of 2 Mbps. Nowadays, there are already 37 members that take part on this neutral point installed in Barcelona and exchange more than 50 Gbps and 10 TB of traffic per month. An increasing evolution that evidences the good health of CATNIX since  its creation over the last 20 years.

CATNIX is the infrastructure that interconnects telecommunication operators, Internet and content service providers, social networks, mobile phone companies, hosting companyies, could services and academic and reaserch networks providers. Managed by the Consorci de Serveis Universitaris de Catalunya (CSUC), CATNIX was launched in 1999 with the aim of facilitating local interconnection in Catalonia.

Twenty years later, CATNIX has become the neutral point of reference in Barcelona, with a deep knowledge of its local market. It offers a large range of services available 24x7, among them the following ones stand out: the DNS root servers set, the monitoring tool, the Looking Glass, the speed test or the M-Lab. Recently, a route-server has also been started up to provide a quick and easy connection to the new members; or the Peering matrix tool, a matrix that visually shows which participants in the neutral point exchange traffic.

Thanks to CATNIX, users have access to part of the DNS root services, hundreds of TLD (Top Level Domain), domains from all around the world and the most popular public DNS servers.
